Summary

Our firm was commissioned to provide a suite of services for a complex mixed-use development comprising an apartment building, retail spaces, and a hotel. The client aimed to achieve sustainability goals through an affordable approach, balancing environmental responsibility with budgetary constraints. We devised a comprehensive strategy integrating cost-effective measures like energy efficiency solutions, water conservation plans, and the selection of sustainable materials—all tailored to fit within the project’s financial parameters and regulatory requirements.

During the planning approval stage, the project faced significant objections from the local community, which threatened to derail the development. Recognising these challenges, we prepared a detailed expert witness statement to address the concerns comprehensively. Our statement highlighted the project’s commitment to sustainability, its compliance with environmental standards, and the benefits it would bring to the community. This testimony became a pivotal element in the proceedings at the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal (VCAT).

Ultimately, the project achieved a successful outcome at VCAT. Our involvement not only provided the client with an affordable and sustainable development plan but also navigated the complex approval process amidst considerable opposition. This case underscores our ability to deliver effective sustainability solutions and advocacy, ensuring positive outcomes for our clients even in challenging circumstances.
